APPLE ACTIVITIES FOR PRESCHOOLERS

September 5, 2015 by Carisa

All about apples from Messes to Memories

We are entering one of my favorite times of the year… Fall! Which means apple season. My sweet kids have had somewhat of an obsession with apples lately-an obsession that I’m totally fine with!!

Over the years, I’ve collected a lot of fun Apple Activities for preschoolers… or kids of any age really! I am excited to share with you!

Apple Activities for Preschoolers from Messes to Memories

If you think about it, apples have a lot of fun colors, textures and tastes. One little lesson you can do is grab several different kinds of apples (Gala, Granny Smith, Red Delicious, Fuji), cut them up and do a little taste test. Try each one and talk about the flavors and how each apple is different from the others. Build vocabulary by using different words to describe the apples: sweet, sour, crunchy, crisp, juicy, smooth, sticky, etc.

Make an apple diagram. Cut an apple in half and feel the inside. Help the kids find the seeds, the skin, the flesh or the fruit part and the stem. Talk about each part more in depth if your kids are ready to learn more… For example, the stem is where it is connected to the tree and if you plant the seeds in the ground then it could one day become a tree.

Every lesson needs some kind of craft! The apple craft that we did was so simple, so cute and my daughter loved it. She could do it all by herself… but as we sat at the kitchen table and I taught her how to do it, we were both having so much fun we just couldn’t stop! See the simple tutorial for Tissue Paper Apples.

Apples are so fun to have as a snack. I always cut my apples a little different to help bring in a little variety so that my kids don’t get bored. Cut up apple chips or fries that you can dip in peanut butter or if you are feeling really sweet… caramel. I’ve got a delicious and easy 3 ingredient caramel dip that you might want to try!! I’ve seen all kinds of fun edible crafts involving apples to make the apples so much more fun to eat.

Fun ways to eat apples.

One of our new favorite ways to eat apples is these amazing apple sandwiches.

Apple Sandwiches a Healthy and Yummy Snack for Kids

My daughter was thrilled the other day when I just handed her the apple and let her eat it whole. I was curious so see if she would know how to eat it since I have always cut the apple before. She did great and I guess since I had already taught her about the stem and the seed she knew she didn’t want to eat that part. Smart girl!

MMMmm. These apple snacks are so creative and yummy!

Dress up your apples…. Here are some fabulous ways to make apples a little more fun. Apple Smiles are a super cute snack with apple slices, peanut butter and marshmallows. Have you ever found a worm in your apple?? These cute Wormy Apples will make any kid smile! Some delicious Apple Mummy Slices will definitely be a treat to everyone! Or try a delicious Apple Sandwich with granola and raisins. These Bloomin’ Baked Apples look like a fancy way to enjoy apples! If you want something super easy that will disappear within seconds try these Baked Apple Chips.

I love using books to help teach my kids and my kids love reading. Honestly, I sometimes have to turn my daughter away because she asks me to read to her so much… Hopefully she learns to read soon!

5 fun books about apples from Messes to Memories

Here are some really fun apple books for kids. One of my favorite books of all time is Ten Apples Up On Top! It’s a very simple and fun book that helps teach numbers and counting with a little humor. Ten Red Apples is another simple book that emphasizes numbers. There’s a cute one called The Apple Pie Tree. Then there’s a super cute story called Bad Apple: A Tale of Friendship… using apples to teach about friendship and kindness. And of course, you will probably want to teach kids about where apples come from, so you should check out Apples Grow on a Tree (How Fruits and Vegetables Grow).

A couple more fun activities you could do…

A musical apple walk… hopping from one apple to the next. In our Mommy and Me group, instead of eliminating the girls each round when the music stopped. The girls had to quickly find an “apple” to share. Which I thought was cute!

Make an apple graph using different colors of apples. Cut out a bunch of different apples… Green, yellow, red and then have the kids organize them into groups or rows.

Be sure to check out this delicious Caramel Dip, perfect for dipping apples!

Ah, I love this post! So many amazing apple ideas! Those snacks look amazing, and I would love to read some of those apple books to my kids! We have an orchard close by that we can go pick apples at, so maybe we can do some of these and then go pick apples this week!
