ABC SERIES: R is for RAIN

February 22, 2015 by Carisa

Rain Cloud Science from Messes to Memories

We have had some pretty rainy, cold and dreary days this winter. And unfortunately, there are even more rainy days a-coming!

But Rain is such a fun topic to learn about. It’s a pretty complicated concept to understand where rain comes from and why, but we sure did have a lot of fun learning about rain.

To start out we looked at our really cool powerpoint put together by Scott. He did a great job of showing the difference between rain clouds and other types of clouds. He also showed different things you can do in the rain. And of course the good things that come from rain… like flowers and rainbows.

I love that he loves putting together fun powerpoints for the kids!

For our first activity, we did some fun rain cloud science!! Lanae and Owen both loved this activity.

I pulled out a big, tall tupperware and filled it with water about 3/4 of the way.

Then I made some puffy clouds with shaving cream across the top. I could’ve stopped there, the kids thought it was so cool looking.

We talked about what happens when water gathers in the clouds and I poured a little water mixed with blue food coloring into the middle of the white puffy shaving cream clouds.

The blue water floated above the clear water and right underneath the white puffy clouds which made it look like stormy rain clouds.

Then in the same little hole that I made with the water, I dripped just plain blue food coloring in until it broke through and started “falling” through the clouds and looked like rain.

Lanae begged me to do it again, so I grabbed the green food coloring so that she could tell that it was new rain falling.

She watched for a while as it floated and swirled and then she started saying over and over… “We have to show daddy!” Can we do science with daddy?” Ha ha!

For our other activities we focused on how rain helps plants grow. We did a little spring craft making a cute little flower.

We also prepped our little DIY watering cans so that we will be prepared for when there isn’t rain and we have to help our plants grow by providing them with water.

It was such a fun week!

I think our next rainy activity might be to go outside and dance in the rain… we do have a whole week of rain in our weather forecast!!

Check out the ABC Series for more fun ideas for every letter in the alphabet.
